9 New Summer Shows to Watch

Remember when summer was a TV wasteland, full of reruns and 90210's strange Beach Club episodes? Well, these days marquee shows premiere all year. So if you're looking for a few good series to add to your SideReel tracker, consider these new dramas, comedies, and dramedies, debuting soon. (For a broader look at the summer's offerings, check out SideReel's Summer Preview.)

Claws
June 11 at 9 p.m. on TNT

Claws follows the rise of five "treacherous" manicurists working at a Florida salon, where there is a lot more going on than silk wraps and pedicures. If anyone can carry this ridiculously fun premise, it's Niecy Nash.

GLOW
June 23 at 3 a.m. on Netflix

Alison Brie stars as Ruth Wilder, an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom in a surprising place: the glitter-dusted world of women's wrestling. Jenji Kohan is an executive producer.

Prime Suspect: 1973
June 25 at 10 p.m. on PBS

A prequel to the long-running crime drama that made Helen Mirren a TV star, this six-parter centers on 22-year-old Jane Tennison's early days in the police force, during which she endures flagrant sexism and disapproval from her family while taking on her first murder case.

Snowfall
July 5 at 10 p.m. on FX

An FX drama set against the infancy of the crack-cocaine epidemic with John Singleton as co-creator? Yes, please. The story, set in 1983 Los Angeles, follows a diverse group of characters whose paths are set to cross in violent ways. Among them: a young "street entrepreneur," a Mexican wrestler, and a CIA operative.

Midnight, Texas
July 24 at 10 p.m. on NBC

If you have a True Blood-sized hole in your TV-watching schedule, this NBC show based on another Charlaine Harris book series is for you. Francois Arnaud (The Borgias) stars as a powerful psychic hiding out in a mysterious town where nearly all the residents have some sort of link with the supernatural.

The Last Tycoon
July 28 at 3 a.m. on Amazon

An adaptation of an unfinished novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, this 1930s drama follows Hollywood Golden Boy Monroe Stahr (Matt Bomer) as he battles father figure and boss Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer) for the soul of their studio.

Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update
Aug. 10 at 9:00 p.m. on NBC

Unwilling to let an entire summer of BANANAS news pass without weighing in, this late-night institution is coming to primetime, featuring regular anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che in addition to other Saturday Night Live cast members and special guests. (There's no trailer, but this is what we can all expect.)

Get Shorty
Aug. 13 at 10:00 p.m. on EPIX

Based on the 1995 film, Miles Daly leaves his job working for a murderous crime ring in Nevada to become a producer, laundering money through a Hollywood movie. Yes, it's another film-to-TV adaptation (always tricky), but this one stars the intriguing pair of Chris O'Dowd and Ray Romano.

Marvel's The Defenders
Aug. 18 at 3:00 a.m. on Netflix

Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist are a quartet of singular heroes who come together to achieve a common goal: save New York City.

White Gold also has two of the guys from The Inbetweeners and is absolutely hilarious and curently available on BBC Iplayer, the whole first series.

Which, as it's a British show, is 6 episodes.

It is so weird! I never would have thought that Glow and Claws premises would be as i triguing as they are. Really looking forward to what Brie and Nash can do with it.

The Weekend Update is the only thing about SNL that I have ever found consistently funny regardless of the "hosts". I'll be checking that out along with Midnight: Texas and, of course, The Defenders.

SNL weekend update, meh, one more show shoving celebrity opinions down my throat. But everything else looks promising. I am looking forward to Marvel, The Last Tycoon, Prime Suspect and Get Shorty. I'll give those shows a try and pass on SNL's opinion mill.
